The steerer tube protrudes out past the upper head tube and is clamped down and held in place by the handlebar stem. Headset Assembly Grease bearing retainers and bearing race cups. Grease also the threads of the steering column. Install bearing retainers into cup shaped races. Place fork through head tube. Thread on adjusting race onto steering column. Install spacers and accessories as appropriate.

Install locknut. A stem A then clamps around the outside of the steerer tube along with spacers B if necessary. Finally, a top cap C keeps everything in place and acts as a headset adjustment. Typically a kit will come with two integrated bearings, a crown race for the fork, a top compression collar, a top dust cover and a couple of headset spacers to use depending on the length of your steerer tube on your forks. A fork with a straight steerer by definition is not a tapered fork.

To the naked eye most BMX forks look the same. Historically BMX forks have an offset of about 33mm, but there are forks available with much shorter offset these days. The shorter the offset the easier it is to balance and move around on the front wheel.
